Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on what we do, how we work, and what it costs — for teams weighing custom software, IoT, or automation.

What does Slash Tech do?
We build custom software, industrial IoT and field hardware, and workflow automation for operations teams — the operational backend behind real businesses that don't fit off-the-shelf. Our focus is systems that keep working long after handover, owned by the people who depend on them.
Where are you based, and do you work outside Brisbane?
We're based in Brisbane, Queensland, and work with clients across Australia. Software and automation work is largely remote; for hardware and field systems we visit sites before we design, wherever they are.
How much does custom operational software cost?
It depends on the work, and we won't quote a number blind — that's how projects get mis-scoped. We start with a short Fit Call and, where it helps, an Understand engagement that produces an honest read on whether technology is the answer and what it would take. You get a scoped, costed plan before any build begins.
Custom software or off-the-shelf — which do I need?
Off-the-shelf is the right answer more often than vendors admit. Custom makes sense when your operation doesn't fit standard tools, when the work currently lives in spreadsheets and people's heads, or when integration between systems is the real problem. Part of our job is telling you honestly when you don't need custom software.
How long does a custom software project take?
We build in slices rather than big-bang cutovers, so the first working piece — the riskiest workflow, validated against real operating data — is usually weeks, not months. Each slice can be operated, audited, and rolled back before the next one starts.
What is operational decay?
Operational decay is the gradual deterioration of a custom software, IoT, or automation system after handover: documentation rots, the people who understood it move on, updates stack up, and one day something breaks and nobody knows where to start. We design specifically against it.
How do we start working together?
The quickest way in is a 25-minute Fit Call. From there, every engagement takes one of three shapes — Understand, Build, or Own — depending on where you are. You can book a Fit Call or read more about the engagement models on our site.
Do you provide ongoing support after the build?
Yes. Our Own engagement covers long-term operation, and everything we build is documented and structured so your own team can maintain and change it. The goal is for you to own the system, not to depend on us indefinitely.
